Information Service for Families of Trans, Gender Non-Conforming and Non-Binary People
While many of us celebrate the news of a family member or significant person coming out as trans, gender non-conforming (GNC) or non-binary, some can find the experience overwhelming, scary, painful and confusing. Many do not feel equipped to manage their emotional response to the news or understand the complexities of a family member socially and/ or medically transitioning. As a non-binary therapist working predominantly with the trans, GNC and non-binary community, I am well versed in the complexities of trans health care both personally and professionally. I have worked with the trans, GNC and non-binary community and their families for over 10 years in third sector, public sector and private sector and have developed workshops and training events for the LGBTQIA community and as continual professional development for NHS staff and third sector staff as a Lead Self-Management Specialist in D&G LGBT Plus.
What to expect from an information session
Information sessions are 1 hour appointments intended for family members of trans, GNC and non-binary people. Families may include close family friends and other significant people - all are welcome. One appointment may be enough to familiarise yourself with terminology, the feminisation pathway or masculinisation pathway or you may need several sessions to get the basics under your belt. Information sessions are designed to be as open or as structed as you need.
Trans health care can be very confusing and overwhelming so it’s important you are in the right mindset for an information session. Making the decision to seek information about a family member or significant person who has come-out as trans, GNC or non-binary is a courageous step but not always an easy one. It's important you work with a provider that is right for you; someone you can feel comfortable with.
